I am a playwright, occasional poet and keen traveller. I’m from the central belt of Scotland and studied directing at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh. Where possible I like to experience new places, faces and cultures. My work is predominately political seeking to unearth unheard stories and it always aims to examine both the light and darkness of modern life

My most recent work includes Human Animals (The Royal Court), Swallow (Traverse Theatre), Remote (National Theatre London) and my next play Girl in the Machine will open in April 2017 at the Traverse. I’ve won some awards including a Fringe First for Swallow and an Olivier for Roadkill and I’m currently associate artist the Traverse theatre in Edinburgh.

In May 2017 I will begin a journey through Mexico going from border to border. I’ll begin my journey crossing from American into Mexico and finishing it crossing from Mexico into Guatemala. My journey will take me via 3 main cities spread across the country: Tijuana, Mexico City and Oaxaca. Though I am keen to make unexpected detours to other places along the way. Though I have specific lines of enquiry to explore the overarching objective is to respond to this remarkable country at this particularly extraordinary point in political history

This journey is part of the Outriders Project which has been created by the Edinburgh Book Festival.
